Enough with the Twitter Spam!

Posted by telecommatt on August 24, 2007

It started with just a trickle. One or two at a time would appear in my inbox. My first thought was that it was rather clever, though clearly a waste of someone’s time. No way would it catch on. Then, quite suddenly, it became a regular flood. My inbox was filling up with Twitter spam!

Those who’ve read some of my other posts might have caught on that I’m not a heavy Twitter user. And worse yet, I’m rapidly tiring of all this social networking garbage. Twitvertising may very well be the last excuse I need to unhook myself from all things virtually social. It started out simple enough. Twitter user Joe533968 (There’s a lot of Joe’s on Twitter) was now following me on Twitter. I’d look up Joe533968 to see if I wanted to follow him as well. Joe533968’s feed would have a lot to say on the subject of mortgages, and by the way, Joe533968 could get you a great deal on a mortgage too. Now it’s become rather blatant. Twitter user BuyMyUsedSocks is now following me. His profile says that he is following 56,004 people. And he has 3 followers. BuyMyUsedSocks’s feed is nothing but messages stating, “Sale! Buy two socks and get a third for free!” Who on God’s rapidly warming earth is actually going to buy something because they were followed on Twitter?!

Because of the open API, I’m sure there’s a million scripts running at this very moment that are adding people to BuyMyUsedSocks’s list of Follows. I seriously think that this is ruining Twitter. I like the concept of microblogging. I like hearing what my friends are up to every once in a while. For these reasons, I keep my notifications turned on and I diligently check out each new follower I get. But what a sour taste it leaves in the mouth to have 6 of 7 new Twitter followers (Like I did this morning.) trying to sell me something. It’s enough to make me want quit the social scene all together.

Let the iPhone Lawsuits Begin

Posted by telecommatt on July 27, 2007

Oh, come on people! I don’t have an iPhone. I don’t want an iPhone. I haven’t even held an iPhone. And I knew before the release date that the battery was sealed. I’m not trying to say I’m all that. I’m trying to say the opposite, actually. Why should I know more about this than some guy who dished out half his paycheck for the thing? Don’t sue the manufacturer, read the reviews next time!

iPhone Class Action Lawsuit

Apple and AT&T over the iPhone.Jose Trujillo is claiming that Apple
and AT&T misled iPhone buyers by not clearly informing them that

Microsoft Patents PC-Based Malware System, Opens Malware Protection Center

Posted by telecommatt on July 18, 2007

Microsoft patents the mother of all adware systems

It’s such a tremendously bad idea that it’s almost bound to succeed. Microsoft has filed another patent, this one for an “advertising framework” that uses “context data” from your hard drive to show you advertisements and “apportion and credit advertising revenue” to ad suppliers in real time. Yes, Redmond wants to own the patent on the mother of all adware.

Okay, this is bad! Windows Vista has already firmed my decision that my next box will run Linux, but can you imagine if something like this was integrated with the next Microsoft OS you purchased? I wouldn’t touch that with a long pole!

The adware framework would leave almost no data untouched in its quest
to sell you stuff. It would inspect “user document files, user e-mail
files, user music files, downloaded podcasts, computer settings,
computer status messages (e.g., a low memory status or low printer
ink),” and more.

In a society where we fast forward through commercials on our DVR’s, where we spend millions annually to remove malignant ad-serving software from our computer’s, where we sued Sony for installing rootkits on our machines when we played CD’s on our PC’s, what is Microsoft doing?? Please show me how this would convince me to buy Microsoft products in the future. I have to ask, WTF?!

Then there’s the whole privacy issue. Seriously, does Microsoft have a right to know how much I spend at the grocery store each month just because I use Microsoft Money to balance my checkbook? (I don’t actually use MS Money, but you get the point.) Taking this into the enterprise level makes this issue even more messy.

Is it just me, or has Microsoft become the big bully on the block who steals everyone’s lunch money and makes the other kids to all of his homework for him?

And in a related story, also from Ars Technica, Microsoft has opened the doors to it’s new Malware Protection Center. Wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest? I wonder if it’ll show you how to remove this “advertising framework” thing?

Bush sleeps through execution – World – Times Online

Bush sleeps through execution – World – Times Online

President Bush slept through the execution of Saddam Hussein in an effort to distance himself from the killing of the Iraqi tyrant whom he once described as “the man who tried to kill my Dad”.

What a role model for the Free World. While I can see the President’s point of view, I have two thoughts that came screaming through my brain when I read this. First, take some responsibility! Okay, you don’t want to become emotionally involved with a painful experience, and you don’t want the world to think that this is an act of war or vengence. Bad news for you. Your war put him in prison to be tried and executed. And it WAS an act of war! (Remember that “War on Terror” you keep cutting our budgets to fund?)

Secondly, sleep is an escape. If you really want some emotional healing from the whole assassination-attempt-thing, try praying, or meditating, or going for a walk, or signing the Kyoto accord.

A Moron Takes the Floor

Think Progress » CNN Fact Checks Inhofe’s Diatribe Against Global Warming Science

On Monday, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) took to the Senate floor and launched into a 45-minute diatribe on global warming science. Repeating his claim that global warming is a hoax, Inhofe said, “The American people know…when they are being used and when they are being duped by the hysterical left.”
