NPR : On the Road with GM’s Newest Hydrogen Car
Except for the drawings of molecules on its doors, the small Chevy Equinox SUV looks like an anonymous, run-of-the-mill General Motors vehicle. It is anything but.
I listened to this earlier today, and it’s a rather well done piece. I wish they had talked more about the actual technology behind the car, but it pretty cool stuff. Not only does the car emit only water, but it creates less water then a traditional gasoline engine.
I don’t really have too much to add to the conversation on this topic, except for one thing. I think that people forget that there are multiple agendas facing a project such as this. Environmentalists want a car that doesn’t emit greenhouse gases, politicians want a car that gets us off our addiction to imported oil, etc. When we judge the success of a project such as this, we have to understand the all of the agendas at work before we can say something is or is not going to make an impact.

I saw a tiny hydrogen powered car on the web but I can’t remember the site. It said it was being sold by Wal Mart. Was this what the NPR article was about?

I don’t believe this is the same as the Wal-Mart car. The articles I’ve found seem to hint that it was a modified Smart Car and that the company took existing cars and retrofitted them as electrics. One article did mention a possible electric Mini Cooper by the same company in 2008. Now THAT would be a slick little ride!
